Affordable Healthcare for the Previously Uninsured

Perspective from a potential beneficiary…me

Are you among the 17 million women in the United States who do not have healthcare insurance? I am and not happy about it, but its true. I would not usually blog about laws and politics, but this topic of Obamacare hits home. Some people automatically assume that I’m just being cheap or that I simply don’t care that I’m burdening taxpayers (which I’m one of) by using free and/or low-cost state and federal healthcare services to manage my medical needs. Both of these couldn’t be further from the truth.

Every year since I became a freelance makeup artist I have applied for medical insurance and have either been denied or simply could not afford it due to a pre-existing condition. A condition that I’ve had since birth and have only had one complication from in 32+ years. That’s a pretty good track record, don’t you think?

I value my health tremendously; it’s one of many reasons I eat healthy, exercise regularly and practice alternative means of healthcare like meditation, acupuncture, yoga and more. However, it’d be nice to have the coverage necessary to see a traditional doctor for my yearly physical without having to spend upwards of $500 a month and also have the peace of mind to know that if I were to need emergency care that I would be taken care of with dignity and not treated as a number.

As it stands the Republican party is campaigning hard to overturn a bill that could potentially save the lives of millions of women. Women who avoid seeing a traditional doctor for symptoms that could easily be treated and possibly die simply because they fear the cost of routine health care.

If you are like me and really want an affordable option for medical insurance, there is one thing you can do to make a difference: Exercise your right and VOTE!
