What To Do With the Hair Down There?

August 14, 2012

While sitting at the nail salon with a friend getting our hands and feet manicured I heard a loud scream from the back room. My friend and I looked at each other and immediately chuckled. We couldn’t be sure, but had a hunch that the scream was likely due to the pain this woman was enduring from a bikini wax. Later that day we talked in-depth about our personal ritual for that “hair down there,” and I discovered that waxing doesn’t get any easier the more you do it, you just build more tolerance.

I never thought about waxing until after my divorce when I turned 30 and started dating again. I was really worried about getting out in the dating scene again and didn’t know the norm. I soon discovered I would defy the norm and just do my own thing. My first bikini wax took place where I regularly got my nails done, which now seems to me a bit strange considering how personal this matter is. It’s like seeing your gynecologist at the gym where you workout regularly. Weird!!!

Anyway, my experience was similar to that of the woman that I heard screaming this weekend, maybe even worse. I literally cried while lying on that table and vowed never to do it again. Now I stick to a nicely trimmed area, but as I understand it, this is not something that is preferred by the masses. So, I took a little time to research other methods for removing pubic hair that are less painful and just as effective as waxing:

  • Nair/Veet  (harsh chemicals though)
  • Norelco Grooming Kit
  • Laser Hair Removal (a bit more pricey)
  • Sugar Waxing (natural ingredients, doesn’t tear off skin, gently exfoliates and lasts longer)

This topic isn’t as taboo as it use to be with celebrities like Eva Longoria, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian all speaking publicly about how they prefer their pubic hair removed. Men too are jumping in on the fun calling pubic removal, “manscaping”. The big questions remains: Is this ritual safe or even necessary? While doing my research, I came across a few disturbing facts about scaping the land down under: It can increase your chances of sexually transmitted diseases and/or bacterial infection if skin is torn, ripped or open as Dr. Emily Gibson explains on KevinMD.com, “if you must eliminate your pubic hair, do it with care”.

If you knew no one would know or even care, would you continue your hair removal ritual? Tell me about it in the comments below, if you dare!
